History of Presa Canario Breed

The Presa Canario Breed history can be traced starting from the seventeenth century Canary Islands in Spain, which is a volcanic archipelago located off coast of North-western Africa. Although it is unclear as to where exactly in Canary Islands it originated, records suggest that there’s a high possibility that it is a Gran Canario breed. Presa Canario enthusiasts also claim that the ancestry of Presa Canario came from one of the established and renowned farm dog in the Islands called Perro de Bardino Majorero. Presa Canario dogs were brought by the Spanish natives to the islands where the colonists and travelers stayed. This breed became the foundation of the champion Presa Canarios that we have today.

Presa Canario breed type has been specified in verifiable reports of the sixteenth and seventeenth century. It has been widely recognized that the Perro de Presa Canario dogs were made amid the eighteenth century with the end goal of protecting property and herd against wild animal intrusion, driving away domesticated animals, as well as eradicating stray and wild dogs in the community. In addition, the Presa Canario breed was also utilized for canine battle. The English settlers in Spain were once fond of setting dog fighting challenges that became a tradition along with some other breeds including Bulldog and Mastiff type. The natives of the Canary Islands consider the dog battles as honourable battles and not the sole function or purpose of the animal.

Our Breed Description

The male Presa Canarios’ height at shoulder level is 23 to 26 inches weighing 110 to 120 pounds, while the females’ height is at 21 to 25 inches with 85 to 120 pounds weight. Their colors range from red, black, brown, silver, and more.

Presa Canarios are an intensely constructed puppy with a huge head, giving a general impression of a strong and brave guard dog, which makes them perfect as a working livestock. They can effectively drive away stray or wild animals and protect their master’s home. Additionally, the Presa Canario breeds are exceptionally tender, smooth, submissive, stifled, dedicated, faithful and always excited to please their owners. However, they can be very suspicious with outsiders and are quite aggressive towards other dog types. So, expert breeding and training is a must for these dogs.

The breed is also portrayed by an inclining top line (with the back being marginally higher than the shoulders). Another normal for the breed is the state of the paws (feline foot) and the catlike development of the creature. The body is mesomorphic, that is, marginally more than the puppy’s height, adding to the catlike development. The Presa ought to be capable, adjusted, and brave in appearance. It is always ready to move with awesome speed, power and strength.
